Hi forum,

I got into gold as investment as a european back in 2003. It has been a good climb. :)

As a condensed mini-intro, this is how I view what is happening now:

First:
The realist. You are wealthy and aim to protect your wealth. You do it by putting your dollar into "stasis". You invest in commodities/PM. If you have no wealth but live in a wealthy country, you can still profit from your labor while it is worth something. The worth of ones labor decreases as people get desperate. That is why it is good to maximize the profit of ones labor in good times instead of getting lazy. When the middle class start to take the bad jobs and move into lower class, it will be too late to get out of debt.

Second:
The idealist. Gold is Money. I too believe that we are experiencing a "debt economy" that isnt sustainable. As Hypertiger writes: wealth moves from the bottom to the top. This creates all sorts of conspiracy theories. I don't bother with that. It clear that governments are controlled by private interests, what more is there to it?

It isn't all negative though. Factories and research needs wealth concentration to occur. The world at large enjoys a higher standard of living than 50 years ago (www.gapminder.org) because of hi-tech and research in medicine. Things have really gotten better for the many, even as the rich have gotten richer. The trouble is, wealth concentration is also the reason for the population explosion. It will be contained either through the natural order, or by the top. I believe this is what most of us is worrying about.

Finally:
The survivalist. I admit, I've been that way all my life. As a kid I had survival gear ready so I could move into the woods should there be a war. That war never happened, and it can go overboard. People with that disposition have been prepping through the ages. Sometimes they were right, most of the times they were wrong. This time they (we) might actually be right. I'm a european, but I've been silently stocking up since last year.

So if you have the disposition, like I have, all of this makes sense. Too much sense! I rent, and I don't even own a car. It does get a bit cooky from time to time; always living spooked and waiting for for a crash. That isn't a good way to live. Too much doom-stuff just wears you down, even if it is wired in your personality. Ferfal's account on things in argentina is the best stuff I've read on this in years. Even in survival mode, you still have to live, and enjoy living. What is there to enjoy about being right about a collapse? Nothing.

I tell my friends to get out of debt, nothing more.

My relatives and family are already well prepared, though they know little of world events. :)

Best regards,
Mach

Mach, I'll add my welcome.

I do disagree with the 'What is there to enjoy about being right about a collapse' statement.

You said "nothing". ACTUALLY there's a LOT to enjoy about being right.

In the first place, you might ACTUALLY survive the collapse.

In the second place, it sounds like you and yours are as prepared as you can be.

Now, having said that, I'm hoping to be at one of our 'bug out' locations, firing up the dvd player into the large screen projector for the whole group. We can watch any movie we wish.

We will also be able to feed ourselves for almost a year with whats put away right now. And as it's a large group, we are fairly self sufficient.

I'm seriously considering moving to one of our locations so I can be 'on site' BEFORE things go south. I can still be in communication with everyone via the net with satellite communications (TV, phone and internet).
